Federal & State Income Tax Calculator

How much federal income tax will you owe this year? What did you pay last year? What is your marginal tax rate versus your effective tax rate? My Taxes helps you answer those questions with published federal and state income tax brackets—not just a single current-year table.

Enter your tax year, taxable income, state, and filing status below, then click Next. You will see bracket-by-bracket federal results, matching state income tax brackets when available, and a timeline view to compare federal tax across years.

How the calculator works

My Taxes applies IRS-style federal rate schedules and state income tax tables to the taxable income you provide. Because U.S. federal income tax is progressive, only the portion of income in each bracket is taxed at that bracket’s rate. The results page shows those layers so you can see why your top bracket is not the same as your effective tax rate.

  1. Choose a tax year and your filing status.
  2. Enter taxable income (often from Form 1040—not raw W-2 wages).
  3. Select your state for state income tax brackets.
  4. Review federal and state results, then open Timeline View for multi-year federal comparisons.
